So you dream of being a farmer . . .

. . . of living simply and in tune with the rhythms of the earth and her creatures? Yes, you dream of wholeness. You want to get connected to your food, its production, preparation, and its sharing. You dream of village harmony, rhythm, and connection. You crave traditional wisdom, the real thing: food, family, community, and connection. Maybe you’d even like to create an ethical livelihood rooted in sound principles of sustainability.

But right now, it all seems overwhelming.

If you’re like most aspiring villagers, at some point you probably find yourself feeling overwhelmed, working a job that doesn’t fulfill you, feeding your family food that doesn’t nourish them, or stalling on the next stage of development because you’re not quite sure how to go about it even though you know in every cell of your body that simplicity and sustainability are the way of the future.

You know you want to increase your self-sufficiency.

But you feel paralyzed. It seems impossible to find the time or know the right place to start. You may have had chickens in the past and they all got eaten by raccoons or coyotes and it feels like too much work to do it all over again just for a few eggs. Maybe you’ve joined a forum to get feedback and build a sense of community. Maybe you even have a real live farm, but are exhausted and overwhelmed. Despite your best intentions, you’re still feeling discouraged, or stuck, or isolated.

I know how it feels.

I’m a city girl. My mother tells the story of when she asked me where orange juice comes from and I said, You squeeze the can. Ya. I get the, not knowing the first thing feeling well.

When my family and I became interested in Food and Farming as adults, we were convinced that we needed to find a way to move to the country before we could have a farm. We would pore over Self-Sufficiency books for hours dreaming of the day when we could escape and begin our country farmer’s dream.

But then we realized we could start right in our own backyard.

As we got started, we quickly realized that much of the “organic farming” information and education is complicated and overwhelming. Tracking zones, researching companion plants, soil testing etc. was just too much for us while raising 2 young children. We also found a lot of the sustainability gurus were quite alarmist. We don’t want to live in fear of the end of the world. We want to live filled with hope and inspiration. We want connection and joy.

So, we set out to find our own way.

And now we make a living as farmer-artist-healers and cultural creatives. We are able to stay home with our kids and have manifested a world where hundreds of people come each season to experience the magic of Lazy-Lady Living in person. We did this perfectly well for years on our city lot, but did move to our 130 acre ranch in rural New Mexico in 2020 (a very special year!) and are now learning about living and farming out of the city.

I want to share this all with you so you can use your own cultural creativity and whatever piece of earth you inhabit to make a better world.

That's why we created this program. . .

An integrated approach . . .

I have taken my knowledge of Permaculture Design Principles and combined it with our experience as urban farmers over the last 15 years as well as with Nutrition Therapy and Traditional, Sacred & Healing Foods, and Decolonial / Indigenous land practices.

Add to these, a deep sense of simplicity, sustainability, and psycho-social cultural repair, and you Folklore Foods & Farming which is comprised of several smaller courses bundled together: Folklore Foods, Lazy-Lady Living, Earth Psalm, Soft Animal, the DIY Supplement Oracle, the Top 10 Supplement eliminator, and the Seasonal Cleanse Kit. All in all, it's a comprehensive program that will introduce you to a whole new paradigm of food and farming, culture and community.

What you need is inspiration . . .

not another list of to-do’s. You need balance and a system for self-sufficiency that includes others. You need a model that reduces work and expands your sense of peace and harmony, that promotes healing and your pursuit of the Good Life.

Freedom from how-to overwhelm . . .

Universally, the Permaculture Design Course is philosophical and design-oriented and actually avoids offering too much situation specific how-to information. Instead, it focuses on foundational philosophy and principles that can be applied anywhere in any situation to make it doable without any how-to guidelines.

The idea is for you to become part of nature rather than a separate “thinking” force.

This takes time and observation. There are no shortcuts to true sustainability. Nothing short of a paradigm shift is necessary and part of that is getting away from rules and “the right way” and moving toward experimentation and connection to nature.

Changed my perception immensely . . .

I liked everything about Lazy Lady Living. This includes the variety of tools to learn from: the reading list, videos, pdf’s, and the extra videos. The variety of topics was great and having a community is an awesome plus. Lifetime access is incredible and very comforting.
Before enrollment, I had a very basic perception and almost superficial thinking and understanding of the many concepts that were presented. Now, I know that this is a topic that I am quite passionate about. I will have to immerse myself in it and live it to completely understand all aspects. Lazy Lady Living has changed my perception immensely.
The biggest benefits I received from completing the course are more determination and more focus. I am now more determined to find land, no matter how small, and more determined to fully live this lifestyle. I am also more focused to delve deeper with this information and incorporate it into all aspects of my life.
Lazy Lady Living provides a wealth of knowledge that is delivered in an awesome format – plus, it can be taken anywhere, anytime, and applied to any situation. Awesome work Krista!

Course Curriculum

Awakened to something great!

I LOVE Lazy-Ladies & Lads! Krista and her family are living examples of what she teaches. It shows in all her classes and that inspires me. I immediately felt like part of something bigger. LLL gave me so much interesting and useful information to apply to my life; I am still doing plenty of research on many subjects. It has changed my family’s lifestyle, I feel awakened to something great! LLL gave me hope. There are people who are actually doing what I want to do and are willing to teach it. LLL taught me a very healthy approach to feeding my family. I have gotten so much benefit out of being able to go back and retake or finish up the classes at my own pace.
I recommend LLL because it is jammed packed with a wealth of information to guide you on a journey of a healthy lifestyle. I couldn’t ask for more from LLL.

You can live simply and sustainably too!

Even if you’re a rank beginner, a depressed veteran looking for fresh inspiration, don’t have a scrap of land or are an overwhelmed mama just trying to hold it together, Lazy-Lady Living will help you get some perspective and make a realistic and inspirational plan.

My family has been urban farming and immersing ourselves in traditional foods for over 15 years and this course includes the philosophy behind it all. We have specifically designed Lazy-Lady Living to take the stress and overwhelm out of farming.

That’s the Lazy part. We strive to do as little work as is possible for the greatest benefit and that is what the course is about – making your life simpler, easier, lazier.

You are just a few clicks away from starting the “farm” you’ve been dreaming of . . .

Blown Away . . .

Lazy Lady Living surpassed my expectations. I knew it was about permaculture but I did not have a pre-conceived notion about it. In fact, I was blown away by the amount of content as well as the depth of the topics that we covered.
My biggest benefits from the course are knowledge of nature-based ‘gardening’ for optimal output with less effort while being better for the environment, your health, etc. and knowledge of home-death. I have also been able to benefit by learning more and affirming deeper the concept of and desire to move towards a gift-economy and practicing without licensure.
Lazy Lady Living is a very well-rounded program that touches base on a lot of things that I feel a typical permaculture program wouldn’t or may not. I really liked the over-all set-up, as well as the ease of watching the videos and that it was a distant learning course. The ease of the online program was quite beneficial and the price was manageable compared to others. I would recommend Lazy Lady Living to friends and colleagues.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
We are busily working behind the scenes to update and individual courses inside the Folklore Foods & Farming program which will start rolling out to new students beginning Sunday January 16th, 2022 and you will have access to all the program content from that point forward - for as long as the program is available! It has already been available for nearly 10 years and we hope to keep updating and improving it for the a long time to come. It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
Can I do the program at my own pace?
We have done our best to make the Folklore Foods & Farming accessible to as many people as possible. As a result the program is 100% online so you can do it from anywhere. As soon as you enroll you will start your first exercise and start getting oriented to the course site including the private LLL Village Forum. You can continue at your own pace. Homework & Reading assignments will be optional/at your own pace unless you upgrade to earning your Permaculture Design Certificate in which case it will be between 2-5 hours of additional work depending on your personal pace. Some people will do less and some more. Of course you will get the most out of the course is you do all assignments and we require you to do this before requesting a refund. You will continue to have access to all the content after the course ends so you can go through it over and over again at your own pace.
Is the permaculture design certificate included?
No it is not included, but you can add on that option for an additional fee of $399. We have done this in order to reduce the price for people who either don’t want/need the PDC credential, or who already have a PDC and don’t want to pay again for it, but are still interested in our unique course and focus on social permaculture.
Can my family take the course together with one sign up fee?
With one paid tuition you get one account/enrollment. That means you can use it on one computer, have one membership to the Folklore Foods & Farming Forum, and one line on Q&A calls. Our system will stop you if you try to login from more than one location. The course price is for a single enrollment, so no your husband/child/mother/friend cannot take the course with you for one enrollment fee. Contact us about receiving a special group rate for 5 participants or more! Please respect our policy.
How is the course content delivered?
All the content is delivered via video & a PDF workbook. The material is so comprehensive and dense that you will likely want to repeat it over and over again. Also, you get indefinite access to the course site for as long as we run the program (including updates and upgrades) which we hope is for a long time…
Can I have one-on-one time with you if I live in New Mexico, or am willing to come to Magdalena?
As you can imagine, we can’t promise extra one-on-one time unless you come for a Farm-Stay which you are welcome to do. Of course we will be available for general conversation, but we cannot offer focused instruction as we will have other guests and projects to attend to. We have occasional farm tours on Saturday mornings but you need to check in and RSVP or we may not be available! We also host retreats which are listed in the Farm-Stay and Farm-School sections of our site.
Will the course be worth my time and money if I am already a seasoned Farmer?
It depends on what you are looking for. Perhaps much of what we cover will be review for you. That said, I recently took a business course which was mostly review, but in the review I was able to fine tune my understanding and really consolidate my knowledge. In fact, because I was already a seasoned business owner I wasn’t feeling overwhelmed by soaking up so much new content, but centered, clear and seriously implementing the tools I was receiving while having the support of the instructors as well as the course community. I do not regret it even though I was way more experienced than most of the other students. Our course will have tidbits in each module for more seasoned “farmers” as well. Small things that can make a big difference. One of our main interests is helping farmers find financial freedom so that part may be interesting to you as well as our many socio-cultural modules like home-funerals and living SLOW and in season.
What if I am unhappy with the course?
We would never want you to be unhappy! If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, contact us in the first 30 days and we will give you a full refund.

Is Folklore Foods & Farming for you?

Folklore Foods & Farming is for:

  • Mothers and Fathers who want to be more connected to the earth and its wisdom.
  • Families wanting to increase their self-sufficiency and interdependence.
  • People with a farming dream . . . or reality.
  • People with access to land, or people with no land of their own.
  • People who have never taken a Permaculture Design Course.
  • People who have a PDC and want to expand and go deeper.
  • People who don’t have the time or money to travel for a live Permaculture Design Course.

Who Folklore Foods & Farming is not for (read these carefully):

  • People who think Permaculture is about being uber-frugal and self-sufficient. We are aiming for generosity and interdependence.
  • People who are only interested in the agriculture part of permaculture. We love the Social/Spiritual aspects as well.
  • People who would rather learn this all via books and Google and don’t mind wading through the morass of un-lazy advice. LLL is streamlines and efficient.
  • People committed to veganism or strict vegetarianism. This course encourages conscious omnivorous-ness.
  • People who want one-on-one instruction. Lazy-Lady Living is for self-directed learners.
  • People who want a primarily hands-on course. Lazy-Lady Living is grounded in principles and philosophy that will allow you to deeply expand and deepen your world and will give you suggested assignments that are hands-on. However it is not fundamentally based in experiential learning. LLL was created to serve people from all over the world who live in differing climates and landscapes

Longing for connection | Rise of the sacred feminine!

Lazy-Lady Living exposed me to so many resources and so much material, very content rich! Before I enrolled, I just knew I was drawn to it. It tapped into that longing for connection to the source of everything, which is so prevalent now. We can see everywhere on Instagram and Pinterest that women, in particular (but not exclusively), are searching for it — the rise of the Sacred Feminine! I just think this longing, and need, is growing in our culture. I really benefited from all the content, and also the affirmation from being a part of a larger community. I recommend Lazy-Lady Living to friends and colleagues because it gives a real experience of what permaculture is all about. *photo credit: @meaghan_clare

Deepening my spiritual practice . . .

I loved that Lazy-Lady Living gave me that extra push in deepening my spiritual practice. At the time I enrolled, it was a bit of a splurge for me. When I first looked at the Lazy-Lady Living program, it seemed like a nice approach to living. Right up my alley. In hindsight I realize the coursework delved more deeply than I expected. I go back to things like Sacred Slaughter, better options for how to deal with death and permaculture in general. Oh, and slow business. I would absolutely recommend Lazy-Lady Living to friends and colleagues. Eight weeks is a short time given how much the course contains. The beauty is one can go and look at it afterward. This way I can spend as much time as I need to understand permaculture and to integrate it in my spiritual practice. If you join the program, you’re in for a delicious treat. I am humbled by the generosity and wealth of information that Krista shares in LLL.
~ Martha Letessier

Pushes the boundaries with spiritual aspects . . .

My favorite part of Lazy-Lady Living was the exposure to such a wide range of topics, and the selected deeper learning of certain aspects and the integration of all the various topics into a way of living. I received thorough deepening of knowledge, more exposure to research / resources in several fields (trauma, initiation, permaculture) and practical and fuller integration of theory into everyday life.
I also saw how well an online course can be facilitated and the potential for using this as a credible means to deliver knowledge.
LLL is the only course I know about that covers the more cultural aspects of permaculture in depth. I also appreciated the connection with Weston A Price principles – an often overlooked “why” of permaculture. It pushes the boundaries with spiritual aspects – something that makes people uncomfortable but should be an accepted part of everyday life. THANK YOU!
~ Jurgen Haitsma

New and profound ideas . . .

I loved Lazy-Lady Living. It presented me with new and profound ideas that I had not thought of before. The class was so much more than about agriculture, permaculture and biodynamics. It was about life and death, celebration, working with sorrow, grief, and conflict. Lazy-Lady Living helped me fill in gaps and deepen understandings.
Overall, I have a renewed appreciation for the life force/Universe that guides us all, and a deeper trust in myself and my own inner wisdom. Krista brings herself into her work in a way that is genuine and comforting, while still being a strong and effective guide. I am so deeply grateful for the chance to rewrite many of my life’s most challenging stories as time progresses. Thank you for the opportunity to work with you!
